The Santa Monica Pier opened in 1909 and gained its carousel building, the Looff Hippodrome, in 1916. The carousel still turns inside, and a solar-powered Ferris wheel lights up the amusement park farther out over the water. A sign on the pier marks the symbolic western end of Route 66.
